An important meeting between Executives of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and Grand Council Treaty #3 took place on April 1, 2005 at the Grand Council headquarters in Kenora, Ontario.
Treaty
#3 Grand Council Chief Arnold Gardner
Treaty #3 Grand Council Chief Arnold Gardner wrote to MNO President Tony Belcourt saying the meeting was "insightful" and that he was looking forward to "build on the current relationship that was initiated by you and your colleagues". In addition to briefing Grand Council leadership on the MNO, there was great interest in the MNO Registry and issues of common concern over "membership".
Grand Council Chief Gardner was particularly interested in clarifying the differences between the MNO and Ontario Metis and Aboriginal Association (OMAA). A great deal of confusion exists among the Chiefs of Treaty #3 who have concerns about recognition of those who are legitimately entitled to claim a Métis right and those who simply identify without any proof of their heritage. Treaty #3 is the only Treaty in Canada which has a "half-breed" adhesion.
It is important that good working relationships are established, that lines of communication are open and that the MNO and the Chiefs of Treaty #3 can begin to work together to address issues of common concern.
